“Looks like the bear was the right choice,” Rose said, looking back at her son as he played with his new plush outside their home. She smiled, then looked up at her husband while he lowered the bucket down into the well. “And you said he would like a dragon more.”
”Hey, most boys like dragons, so I just assumed,” Aaron laughed, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead before looking towards their son as well. He smirked, then stuck his tongue out at him, chuckling as he watched him make the same face back. His attention returned to the well as he slowly began to pull the bucket out. “Get the next one ready, dear. Rose?” His brows pressed together when he saw her looking up, following her gaze to the sky. His eyes widened in horror, his grip on the rope releasing. Dragons… their scales were as dark as night, and ahead of them was a larger dragon with a broken horn and a purple gem fused to his chest. No… it couldn’t be. “Rose… g-get Nathan now. Go, run!” he urged her, following behind her as they both tried rushing back towards their home.
The dark dragons descended upon the village, screams of terror filling everyone’s ears and the sky quickly filling with smoke and ash as fire rained upon the houses. Rose’s gaze kept shifting between the dark dragon flying down, and their home. They were so close. They needed to get to Nathan. When she looked up again, her eyes widened. “Aaron! Get ba-“ her words were cut off as she was thrown down to the ground from the impact of the large dragon landing next to them. Aaron too was sent to the ground, and he immediately reached for a plank of wood from one of the fallen houses. He swung it at the dragon with a shout, shuffling back while the dragon moved forward, snarling furiously. The dragon slammed his talons down onto Aaron’s chest, the air being knocked right out of him. Rose remained frozen in horror, her eyes filling with tears and her breaths quickening as she watched the dragon slowly dig his talons into her husband’s chest… “Aaron!” she screamed when she finally found her voice.
The dragon turned to look at her, and his eyes grew wide. Rose stared right back at him, her body trembling in terror as she gazed at his blazing purple eyes. “Galavin…” she breathed, her voice full of pain as her attention shifted between him and her dead husband beneath his talons. She gasped and fell onto her back when a dark dragon suddenly appeared in front of her, roaring furiously in her face. The dragon raised its talons to strike her, but was halted by a roaring order from his king. Next thing Rose knew, she was in Galavin’s talons, being flown away from her burning village. She shouted and struggled as much as she could, the wind carrying her tears away as she wept and stared at her home. Everything was gone… Her husband was gone, and her son… She didn’t save him. She couldn’t save either of them…
